2009 ePortfolio Model

A repost of previously shown model but with a subtle change now showing the link from Parents, Caregivers, Family and Students to both posts and private posts. This was always the intention but the previous model didn’t make this clear.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this way. Having just commented on drawings Jamin has put up I thought I would add a few ideas here:
    - Consider whether it is better for parents to use the log-in of their child or have their own. If digital idfetities are important then maybe having two log-ins but linked is better;
    - Read/write permissions do require a little thought and may not be well provided for in any tools, even commercial ones;
    - Embedded works well but sometimes links suffice. The flexibility to handle both would be nice, a little like IMS CC (http://www.imsglobal.org/cc/cccontenthierachy.jpg); and
    - Is the class group important, meaning some access to member of the class (or working group within)?

    Paul.

    Thanks for your comments Paul.
    To address some of your ideas/questions.
    1. Certainly have considered parents having their own login to access private posts within the eportfolio. This is indicated in the diagram with the registered user box linking the owner to parents, family, caregivers and students. However this is not a big issue as to whether they have one or not as we actively promote students and their parents sitting down together to view and discuss learning and reflections and comments.
    2. I agree with your comments here regarding read/write permissions. A blogging platform does not really handle this well, particularly when setting up a class of 30 permissions. A product like Mahara and its views function handles this very well.
    3. While the embed vs. links debate can go either way, our criteria for eportfolios describes how learning artifacts should be displayed within the blog, not through a link. I am personally really pro the embed option. It provides a one stop shop for the viewer to see learning and provide feedback. You have to consider the technological capability of the other stakeholders and also basics like the internet connection. I never want the viewer to be frustrated. I think of this as being similar to the old web design concept of no information being more than 3 clicks away.
    4. Yes class/other student access is important especially for peer assessments and critical friend relationships and feedback. But as pointed out with the parent login, we want this to be active access, with the student and their peer/group sharing, discussing and commenting together.
